Period Victorian doors have a simplicity in their design which makes them effortlessly memorable. And at the same time its simplicity makes it slip seamlessly into any décor. So if you are renovating a period property you can install some true to era design authenticity. And if you are fitting out a contemporary home you can bring in a touch of class with a door that is quiet and soothing in its appeal.
Either way there is a calm elegance and a nostalgic feel to this classic design. This is a door design which somehow evokes memories from childhood or visits to stately houses and expensive restaurants. Places where you feel slightly in awe of your surroundings yet at the same time feel welcomed as an honoured guest.
A Design Classic
Georgian doors were audaciously opulent with their bold, four or six raised panels sometimes further enhanced with pronounced raised mouldings. In contrast the Victorians calmed everything down and steered towards four flat panels. Two elongated panels at the top and two shorter at the base.
But, typically, there are still ornate mouldings around each panel. Perhaps it was the designers of the time that couldn’t quite leave all the flourish behind. Or perhaps it was the door makers who insisted on showing off their new mechanized production methods. Perfectly formed and regular mouldings surround each panel, precisely mitred into the corners by the craftsmen.
As well as the standard four panel door the Victorians also used glazed top lights in certain areas. Such as halls and landings to let more natural light into darker areas. They also introduced the ‘Vestibule’ door for the wardrobe closet off the hallway. This came in for coats and cloaks, walking sticks, umbrellas and parasols.
Once hung the door was further finished off with brass door knobs and swinging escutcheons to cover the keyholes on the outside of the door, the rim-lock placed on the inside.
