What are the important features of Georgian internal doors? As Great Britain moved into the Georgian period, extravagant fashion was all the rage. Homeowners started to demand more, even from their Georgian internal doors. Both the front and internal doors were highly important home design features for the well to do in the Georgian era. Because they made a statement about the status and wealth of the owners. Witness to the advances made in machining and joiners’ craftmanship the style and intricacy of doors began to develop. For the Georgians the doorway had to match the opulence of the room. Onlinedoorstore have the door to match your interior design wishes.
Early Georgian 1714-1790
The first noticeable feature of a Georgian door is that it is split into panels, commonly four or six. Then the panels became raised with bevelled edges into the stiles. Nowadays the fashion at the time seems relatively dull as most were painted in dark green or brown colours. Sometimes the decorators further grained the paint surface to represent wood. Also in this era, mass production started to emerge, and the popularity grew. In grander homes, the doors on the main floors were sometimes double doors with ornate handles and bell-rings. However even well to do homes’ upper floors, and below stairs would have had the more straightforward ledged and braced doors found in lower echelon homes.
Late Georgian 1790-1830’s
The carved wood workings of a professional carpenter remained popular for architraves and more grandiose door frames. But now a new trend emerged with the addition of fanlights to allow more light into the sometimes dark hallway. To begin with the fanlights were a simple rectangular shape, but later designers introduced the now iconic semi-circular type window to the front door. Eventually an even greater expanse of often leaded glass became fashionable with the addition of sidelights to the main door. Also in this latter period parlour and vestibule doors were also sometimes glazed. The principal internal and entrance doors of this era’s grand houses were four or six-panelled planed oak, whilst they made other internal doors from lesser woods. Towards the end of the era street scenes with rows of identical buildings with dark, black and green doors now became interspersed with a new fashion, the blue door!
