After a year at home, it's likely you'll have a long list of things you want to tweak or change about your property. Sometimes, sprucing up your house is as simple as installing new internal doors and giving them a one-of-a-kind finishing touch. This 'How To' guide from Dulux will show you how to paint an internal door to create a finish you won't be able to resist.
Tools
Don't worry, it's easy to paint an internal door, provided you have the right tools for the job. Before you begin, ensure you have the following items to hand, in order to make the process nice and simple:- A screwdriver
- Masking tape
- A dust sheet
- Sandpaper
- Two cleaning cloths
- A synthetic-bristle brush
Method
Now you're ready to paint an internal door! Firstly, place a dust screen or protective cover on the floor. Remove the door handle using a screwdriver and apply masking tape to protect your brackets and hinges.- Next, you need to clean and sand the door. Even if you're using a brand new, untreated internal door from our collection, the wood will need to be lightly sanded and wiped down before you begin. Make sure the door is dry before taking the next step.
- To ensure a smooth finish, dampen the door’s surface with a cloth, then apply Dulux Primer & Undercoat for wood. This primer will take two hours to dry. Next, use a synthetic-bristle brush to apply the first coat of Dulux Quick Dry Satinwood. This paint comes in dozens of shades, so you can find one to suit your style.
- Start by painting the top and the panels of the door, then move on to the rest of the door. Allow to dry, then apply the second coat, ensuring paint strokes are applied in the same direction to avoid brush marks. It's always best to go with the grain of the door. Once fully dry, remove the tape from the hinges and re-attach the door handle.
- Finally, create a striking finish by painting the frame and skirting boards in the same colour, or opt for a contrasting shade that will really allow the woodwork to pop. You could also use masking tape to add a cool pattern on your internal door. Dulux offers a wide selection of paints for wooden doors, so you can browse their products if the Satinwood paint doesn't quite work for you.
