When it comes to ordering new internal or external doors, there's much to consider. As well as selecting the right style and deciding on handles and paint colour, you also need to ensure you know how to successfully measure doors. If you get the dimensions wrong, you could end up with a door that's ill-fitting or totally unsuitable.
So, to help you ensure you get the perfect finish for your home, whether for your internal doors or new front door, we've listed a few helpful tips. This guide should assist you in being able to get the right dimensions and the perfect doors for your home. Firstly, most doors are supplied measured in inches, but some are in centimetres. This handy
size conversion chart will help you to convert an existing measurements. At Online Door Store, we sell doors in both imperial and metric sizes.
How to measure doors
So, how should you successfully measure doors? Well if you already have a door in place, simply take the measurements of that door. But only if it fits the frame perfectly. Take a width measurement across the top, the middle and the bottom of the door, to make sure the width is the same all the way down. If you find that the door isn't equal all the way down, use the widest measurement. Your joiner will then be able to adjust the door to fit the space.
Next, take a height measurement from top to bottom, from each side of the door. This will give you the correct height measurement. Then you need to measure the thickness of the door. Do the same again, ensuring the door is the same thickness all the way down. You should now have the width, height and thickness measurements of your door and are ready to place an order.
How to measure doors, without a door
If you're fitting a door without a door currently being in place, or you have an ill-fitting one that needs replacing, then follow these instructions. Take a width measurement across the top, middle and bottom of the door frame. This will help you establish that the width of the door is the same all the way down. Then take 3mm away from this measurement, to allow for a gap.
After this, take a height measurement from each side of the door frame, going from top to bottom. This will give you the required height of the door. Once again, take 3mm away from this measurement to allow for a gap. Finally, you'll need to decide on how thick you want your new door to be. Normally, doors are 35mm thick, while fire doors tend to be 45mm thick. You can now use these measurements to place your order.
